About Big Woods Voices

.
Big Woods Voices celebrates a cappella vocal harmony through arrangements grown from poets old and new, American roots genres, world folk styles, and Will Danforth’s deep creative well. From heart-stopping to foot-stomping, prayerful to fun-filled, dissonant to dulcet, Big Woods Voices brings the spirit of southern Vermont to life through rich harmonies and soulful interpretations.
.
Big Woods Voices unites four veteran area singers in celebrating their common passion for a cappella harmony: Alan Blood, long-time member of area groups including the Blanche Moyse Chorale, I Cantori, Blue Moon and House Blend; Will Danforth, singer-songwriter, traditional acoustic artist, and the group’s arranger/composer; Becky Graber, leader of the Brattleboro Women’s Chorus and Animaterra Women’s Chorus in Keene; and Amanda Witman, founder of the Brattleboro Pub Sing.
.
Their recent CD, Big Woods Voices: Poetry in Harmony, features Will Danforth’s beautiful musical arrangements of poems by Wendell Berry, David Whyte, William Butler Yeats, Alice Oswald, and others.

Poetry in Harmony Recording

Now Available on Bandcamp (digital or physical) or contact us directly for local pickup.

We gathered together in one room to make this recording in December 2021, in the brief lull between the fall of Delta and the rise of Omicron during the long COVID pandemic. We recorded each track in live harmony because we can’t imagine singing together any other way.

Our recording features fifteen of Will’s beautiful, original four-part a cappella arrangements of poetry, including poems by Wendell Berry, Theodore Roethke, John Masefield, David Whyte, Rainer Maria Rilke, Mirabai, Daniel Leavens Cary, Leath Tonino, Alice Oswald, and Will Danforth himself, produced/engineered by Julian McBrowne and wrapped in beautiful cover art by Rachel Wyatt Lindsay.
